Zack Snyder’s revelation that the ending of the Watchmen movie will omit the extradimensional cephalophod of the comics has inspired an <airquotes>internet backlash</airquotes>:

Reading the interview in the first link I think they’ve actually got a more elegant ending than the one in the graphic novel. Certainly better than Sam Hamm’s solution (repeat after me: Time Travel is never the answer).

And I like the trailer better, after repeated viewings. It’s easy to be pessimistic and cynical, but let’s not forget that Zack Snyder is second only to Robert Rodriguez in realizing a comic creator’s artistic vision faithfully on film.

עכשיו, זה לא ששיעמם לי. כלומר, רוב הזמן משעמם לי, אבל בהחלט לא הייתי מטריחה עצמי בעליותיה המשביזות יום א’ של מזא”ה רק כדי לעלות על הממצא המרתק הנ”ל. בפעם המי יודע כמה החבר’ה של ערוץ 10 ביקשו ממני לעשות משהו יעיל בשבילם כמו לספר לכם על תכנית הריאליטי החמה הבאה שתנמיך לכם את מפלס האינטליגנציה רק בעוד מעט. האמת שהתכנית הזו היתה מתלבשת בול על בובליל כקבלן בניה מוכשר וא-פרידמני אך נוכח הוא להתבצר בוילה נאה למען יביא במליון שקלים ויהיה כוכב הטלנובלות הבא (תיכון השיר שלנו, מישהו? ואל תגידו שלא אמרתי.)

מי שלא קרא מספיק במקומונים, כנראה לא שמע על תכנית היבוא החדשה הנקראת “הבלוק” - מכניסים חמישה זוגות לחירבה במרכז תל אביב, עליהם לחיות באבק ובטיח במשך 3 חודשים ומטרתם לעצב דירה אה-לה-פיבקו-שמאטע בתקציב של 200 אלף שקלים. הזוכה? מי שמצליח למכור הדירה בכל המרבה במחיר. הידד!

 

 

ערוץ 10 שווים את ההתעוררות המוקדמת שלי בעיקר בשביל בופה. כלומר, הייתי מוכנה למות כדי לחיות מגבינת ברי כל חיי-האחרי, כך שלהקדיש שעתיים מחיי לנתח עסיסי שכזה פלוס סלט קפרזה עם מלא צנוברים בהחלט נשמע כמו עסקה משתלמת עבורי. משסיימתי לחפור בלחמניות עם חמאה וגו’ הוזמנתי לסיגריה על גג אותו בניין, המזא”ה 76, והתגלה לי נוף אדיר עם קידי פול בנוי מדיקטים. אדירות. הייתי משתכשכת לולא היה קר, הל! הייתי אפילו עושה חיקויים של תאורנים שהתרוצצו שם על קצוות הגג לולא דרך פ”ת איימה תחתי. 

בפוגשנו בחיים אתגר שלקח אותנו לדירות המשופצות, סיפר שממש זה עתה הסתיימו הצילומים לתכנית כך שהדירות שבהן ביקרנו היו בעצם במצבן המוגמר. כל דירה, שכאמור החלה מחורבה מוחלטת הפכו למה שהן במהלך 3 החודשים האחרונים בהם התפרסמו כל כך הרבה כתבות על כך שחיי השכנים הפכו לסיוט מתמשך. כתוצר מוגמר מדובר בדירות בנות שני חדרים וחצי. כל דירה מעוצבת ע”פ טעמם של הזוג ומה שהצליחו להכניס בתקציב. 

דעתי מסויגת. 

הדירות הללו יראו על פני מסכי הטלויזיות שלכם פצצה, שלא יהיה ספק. אך הן קטנות ומקומצות ביחס לדירות של 2 חדרים וחצי (למרות שלא מצאתי את החצי). כל דירה נאמדת בגודל של 55 מ”ר ברוטו. בפוטנציה זה נשמע רחב, בכל זאת, כל סטודנט עלוב כלכלית פחות או יותר בהחלט ידע להעריך מרחב שכזה אחרי שגר בדירת 3 חדרים שפוצלה ל-7 וגר לו בתוך קופסת שימורים בת 25 מ”ר ברוטו כשהריח של הבצל מהבישולים של 5 שעות לפני והטראנסים של השכן מהקיר מנייר עולים בחושיו עת מקיים יחסי מין והתוצאה היא עומד לא עומד. כאילו שמישהו מביא בחשבון שבנוסף לשכ”ד לדירה כזו שמרקיע קרוב ל-3000 שקלים לחודש יש להצטייד גם בויאגרה. הנקודה היא לא זו.

הנקודה היא שאלו דירות זיונים. אולי דירות זיונים לתיירים. כן, לתיירים יהיו שם אחלה זיונים. במיוחד אם הם אירופאים והם תכולי עיניים והם מזמינים אותי לבוא, אבל זה כבר לפוסט אחר. תהיתי בקול מול חיים אתגר האם אין חשש לאיזשהו קושי במכירת הדירות במיוחד לאור השפל הכלכלי, בעיות התזרימים והמשכנתאות והעובדה שהדירה הזו בעליל אינה מתאימה למשפחה, גם לא בסדר גודל שאחד מהצדדים עקר ובתכניותיהם בעתיד הרחוק לאמץ איזה ילד דרפוראי. חיים ענה שההתעניינות בדירות מצד מתווכים למען האמת התחילה כבר. חשבתי על זה עוד קצת. האמת היא שבאמת אין סיבה שלא תהיינה התעניינויות, אחרי הכל, דירות שנבנו בריאליטי ופוצצו לצופים את המסך לא מתפיידות כל כך מהר לפני שתספיקו להגיד “פיראס חורי? נשמע לי מוכר, הוא עובד במקרה בסעיד בעכו? אני מת על החומוס שלהם, אני שם כל פעם שאני בעכו, ואין קוליפורמים!” כיוצאי ריאליטי אנשים בשר ודם. הרי מדובר בכל מיני דרים אפארטמנס במרכז תל אביב שלא חולמים עליהם אפילו בחלומות הרטובים שבין קסאם לקסאם. אבל מתווך נשאר מתווך, והם זבלים וימכרו את הנשמה שלהם בשביל לעשות כסף מחרא. תאמינו לי, הוצאתי רשיון לתווך בדירות ולי בהחלט אין בעיה למכור את נשמתי לכל אחד. 

מצד שני, באמת שבאופן ריאלי קשה לי להבין את הצורך או את הרצון שלאדם השפוי יהיה כדי להתגורר בדירות עם אידיליה גדולה ומרחב קטן. כלומר, הפוטנציאל הגלום עצום, כל עוד לא תחל פה איזו מלחמה ולא יתעופפו עלינו טילים אטומיים-לא-אטומיים, מאד סביר שמי שישים ידיו על הדירות הללו יכסה באופן לא רע בכלל את ההוצאה בעזרת השכרת הדירה בשנה הבאה לתיירים. שוב, חזרנו לנקודת דירות הזיונים של תיירים, ואם יש איזה שוודי שחזר עכשיו מהאולפן ולמד את המילה “בלוג” וחיפש בגוגל, הוא בהחלט מוזמן להשאיר תגובה. אם חשבנו שהשנה הקטע הזה רץ חזק, חכו לשנה הבאה. עכשיו כבר כולם מוכנים מראש - בפסח מרביצים את השיפוץ הכללי שינוע בוודאי בין 1500 ש”ח ל-22000 כדי שאת החודשים שבין מאי לספטמבר יוכל לבלות אצל הוריו בזמן שדירתו מופקדת בידי כמה חבר’ה שגילו את הקוק והחתול והחליטו ש-250$ ליום עם ריהוט קומפלט זה אכן הרבה יותר משתלם ממלון. אויש. המוח היהודי. איזו המצאה נפלאה.

זהו באופן מובהק עתיד הדירות של “הבלוק”. חשבתם שיהיה לכם איזשהו סיכוי שאתם תמצאו את עצמכם שם אלמלא אותה תיירת שיכורה שפגשתם בקלרה?

מעבר לכך, מה שבטוח מצפה לצופים חוית השרדות מאד לא סוונאית. באשר לשאלת הרייטינג? אני אשית צופה שהקהל עשוי להצביע ברגליים לנוכח התחושה שאולי עובדים עליו בעיניים. יש שיאמרו שיש גבול לשטויות שמוחם הקודח של מאות הוגי תכניות ריאליטי ברחבי העולם יכולים להמציא. אני אשית חיה עם המדיה הנמוכה הזו בשלום שכן סוף סוף הטלויזיה הגיעה למקום השלווה שלה היכן שהצופה בהחלט לא צריך להפעיל תאי מח שגם כך לא שרדו את חווית האח הגדול.

בתור פישרית קטנה בלימודי שנה א’ לקולנוע המרצים דואגים להדגיש בפני שוב ושוב עד כמה הטלויזיה היא דבר נמוך. מאידך, במוספים של הסופ”ש האחרון ציינה המפיקה לטי גרובמן שאביה מגדיר גם את הקולנוע כמוצר הנחות ביותר ביחס לאמצעים אמנותיים אחרים כך שאת הכל אני לוקחת בערבון מוגבל וצופה לי כך או כך חיים שיכללו עיסוק ברפש נמוך. בהיבט הכללי, לאן שלא אפנה בעולם הדיגיטלי הזה אתעסק בסופו של דבר במשהו שהוא נמוך מבחינה תודעתית, כי מי שיורה גבוה נשאר עני. בעצם, גם מי שיורה נמוך. טוב, לא משנה. גם ככה אני בונה על בעל עשיר.

One of the nice things about ICon in recent years is how one of the book sellers (Tzomet Sfarim?) arranges a big display of all of the author guest of honor’s books. I think I first noticed this when Neil Gaiman was the GoH, but it persisted when Carol Berg was here, and I noticed it this year with Steven Brust, when I picked up 3 volumes collecting the first seven Vlad Taltos novels. Of course, by the time I got the books it was the end of the con, Mr. Brust had already flown home and I’d missed all his events (although here’s video from his writing workshop).

I hadn’t read any Brust before the con (I’ve owned To Reign in Hell for many years, but haven’t read it), and I seem to think there might have been some missed opportunity or something here, although perhaps not. However, after reading The Book of Jhereg (collecting the first 3 novels - Jhereg, Yendi and Teckla), I’m thinking that every roleplayer of my generation will instantly recognize himself or people he knows in these books.

The countess introduced me to analyzing books through the perspective of roleplaying (I may be repeating myself on this point). She’d look at Tim Powers’ Last Call or Phillip Pullman’s Subtle Knife and identify which character is a PC whose player joined the game in later sessions, or the witch queen who had a player who only showed up for one session, and is therefore fascinating and active in one scene early in the book and just a parrot for some plot point when she reappears later (obviously controlled by the GM). Once you consider this outlook, plenty of other examples in popular literature appear.

But darn, Vlad Taltos lives in a world defined, on an ontological level, by First Edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

See, he’s an assassin, in a highly magical world, also a bit of a sorcerer and a master of witchcraft, and he’s got a familiar (a small, venomous flying reptile called a Jhereg that’s also intelligent and telepathic). He lives in an empire of what are, basically, D&D Elves (tall, thin, extremely long-lived) and when he’s not assassinating or running his criminal operations, he’s hanging out at the floating castle of his best friend, Morrolan the dragonlord (high-ranking noble, sorcerer and warrior), with Morrolan’s cousin Aliera, a sorceress with a soul-destroying sword taller than herself who apparently got sucked through time from the distant past. What’s Vlad’s association with these noble types? Well, he works as Morrolan’s “security consultant”, and all three also have a history of adventuring together in assorted dungeons…

This goes without mentioning Vlad’s wife (also an assassin - they met when she got hired to kill him, as detailed in Yendi) and his pal Kiera the thief, or how everyone he meets who isn’t an undead sorceress (and ally - by this time, I’m already reasoning that being an assassin makes Vlad of evil alignment, and therefore allowed to hang out with Necromancers) has at least some level in some class; and yes, it feels very obvious that nobody in Jhereg has a job or a profession - they have character classes, and they do what they have to do not to earn a living but to gain XP.

Now, I shouldn’t be surprised by this really, because I recall reading an interview with Brust in Dragon magazine many years ago, and he did say there that Vlad started out as a character in a D&D campaign, but it’s pretty shocking to see how artificial it all feels when presented as a world, and how clear it feels that Vlad is played by the guy who wants character development and gives his dude neat little quirks for a personality, while his buddies go all-out munchkin trying to create Elric (but a cheerful sort of Elric!) or an Anime princess.

And you also understand that the only reason Vlad and other humans (or “Easterners”) can match the far more long-lived and experienced Dragaerans (=elfs) is that they’ve got level limits.

I will note that with that reading (this is fic about a high-level AD&D campaign character) to explain the artificiality, I could get on with enjoying the story, which is enjoyably brisk-paced and delivered in a sarcastic Zelazneyesque first person narration (now Zelazney - there’s someone who writes like a roleplayer… which he was).

Vlad’s story does take an interesting twist in the third book - Teckla - which eschews the use of all his high-level buddies and focuses on domestic and social troubles as Vlad’s wife gets involved with a bunch of revolutionaries and he spends a lot of time angsting and struggling against having his political awareness expanded, between dodging assassination attempts - it’s as if Brust decided to suddenly inject Real People into Vlad’s world. While a very intriguing development, I suspect it will be back to high fantasy and dungeoneering in later books: Vlad’s cool assassin character type comes perilously close to crumpling like a soggy cardboard cutout when taken too far out of his AD&D milieu.

Because I moved to a different office (formerly “the small conference room”, and sadly, we kept its table) the same day I was involved in a minor fender-bender, it took me three days to admit to myself that the pain in my back isn’t because of sitting at bad desks on broken chairs in uncomfortable positions and therefore isn’t a kink that can be stretched out but rather a cause for worry. I think it got steadily getting worse until I finally woke up in agony on Friday, but I’m not sure if I haven’t been able to delude myself until now about the nature of the pain out of myopia and optimism.

The latest release of Kubuntu (the Ubuntu distribution variant I use on my home computer) included KDE 4.13, the fancy new Desktop Environment for people who don’t care why there’s a K in the name. As you know, Jim, there are two major “Desktop Environments” on Linux: Gnome, which tries to be more “usable” (or “minimalist but accessible”) as defined by Linux geeks, and KDE, which tries to be “Prettier” (or more “polished”), as defined by 14 year old Windows users. If earlier versions of KDE tried to be prettier than Windows XP, then KDE 4 finally gets around to ripping off Vista, or the Mac OS, or whatever (I wouldn’t know - I never used Vista, and just clicked a few buttons on a Mac once).

The big thing to make KDE4 prettier is it’s new desktop, called “plasma”, which can embed all sorts of pretty widgets. These are mostly pretty, but not quite well thought out. For example, instead of showing files scattered about the desktop, they now appear in a sort of folder, which looks like a pretty file browser window, with pretty icons - except this isn’t - if you click a folder icon inside it, the real file browser program opens. My favorite widget is a picture slideshow thing, and there’s a pretty weather report widget I downloaded (it requires compiling, but is very pretty).

It’s kind of jarring that the default look of plasma widgets is all glassy black and dark blues, while the default look of all the new KDE applications is light grey - so when the real file browser opens up, it looks completely different than the Plasma file folder widget (or the file menu in the task bar or whatever). Apparently, plasma uses its own themes, and the default theme, called Oxygen, doesn’t at all match the default theme of all the rest of the KDE applications (called also, confusingly, Oxygen). Also, Firefox (and Thunderbird) aren’t KDE applications, so they really don’t match the way all the other programs look. Luckily, there’s a Firefox theme for KDE4, KFirefox.

To match the l33t blackness of Plasma, I switched to a dark KDE theme called Wonton Soup (for no reason I can understand); then I recalled Zenburn, the lovely dark vim color scheme I really liked when I first saw it in Cream, but which I has forgotten about until Tal mentioned it in his LJ. So I installed zenburn for vim and for Konsole (the KDE terminal). Andf then I noticed that KFireffox didn’t really pick up all the system colors, so I switched back to the default Firefox theme, which did use all the dark Wonton soup theme colors.

And finally I discovered that there is a Plasma theme, called Aya, which does use your system colors (that is, the same colors as every other program).

But by then, I’d already grown rather fond of all the dark grey on my desktop.
